Our Speakers

Richard Peterson, M.D.

From imaging the brains of investors to developing sentiment-based investment models, Dr. Peterson helps clients navigate emotional markets. As Managing Director of MarketPsych he coordinates the data distribution, training and consulting, and asset management operations. He is the creative force behind the Thomson Reuters MarketPsych Indices, which quantify sentiments and macroeconomic topics in social and news media text analysis for 6,000 equities, 200 countries, 50 currencies, and 30 commodities. The world’s largest hedge funds use the data to track speculative activity in global markets and for risk management.

Dr. Peterson also specializes in optimizing financial behavior. He frequently speaks on behavioral finance, training portfolio managers and traders to improve their decision making and performance. In the educational field he has developed popular financial personality tests to help clients identify decision strengths and manage biases, published widely in academic journals including Games and Economic Behavior and Journal of Neuroscience, has written three textbook chapters, and is an associate editor of the Journal of Behavioral Finance. His books "Inside the Investor's Brain" (Wiley, 2007) and “MarketPsych” (Wiley 2010) - both named top financial books of the year by Kiplinger's.

Dr. Peterson received cum laude Electrical Engineering (B.S.), Arts (B.A.), and Doctor of Medicine degrees (M.D.) from the University of Texas. He performed postdoctoral neuroeconomics research at Stanford University and is Board-certified in Psychiatry. He lives in the New York area with his family. Dr. Peterson helps clients improve investment performance, manage risk, and gain new insights into the markets and themselves.

Frank Murtha, Ph.D.

Dr. Murtha began his career at the New York-based consulting firm of RHR International Company, where he developed senior executives and pioneered a specialty in the emerging field of behavioral finance. In 2001, he co-founded MarketPsych LLC, the first Behavioral Finance Consultancy in North America, where he has specialized in helping financial professionals apply behavioral finance to build better relationships, gain referrals, increase assets under management and improve investment returns. Over the last decade, Dr. Murtha has performed hundreds of speeches and workshops for many of the world’s leading financial institutions.

His path to the financial services industry is a non-traditional one. Dr. Murtha holds a doctorate in Counseling Psychology from The University at Buffalo and has taught at UB, Penn State and New York University. While obtaining his Ph.D. he carved out a niche as an expert on the psychology of gambling. His groundbreaking dissertation was the first to explore the effect of cognitive errors in gambling behavior. What most distinguishes Dr. Murtha from other speakers is his ability to take the weighty scientific and academic subjects of his training and communicate them in a practical, and often humorous way.

An investing psychology content expert, Dr. Murtha is interviewed frequently by news and print media outlets and has been featured numerous times on National Public Radio, Nightly Business Report, CNBC and World Business Review. He works as a consultant, speaker, and writer based out of the New York City area. An award-winning author, his recent book, MarketPsych: How to Overcome Fear and Build Your Investor Identity was honored by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance as one of “Three Best Financial Books of 2010”.

What sets our speakers apart?

MarketPsych’s Four Criteria. MarketPsych’s presentations are:

Cutting Edge
The fields of financial psychology are rapidly evolving, yielding new and better ways to improve performance. The interdisciplinary team at MarketPsych is on the cutting edge of these subjects both in research and in practice. We integrate the latest developments into our work so our audiences are assured of the most advanced information out there.
Behavioral finance insights are, quite simply, fascinating. We communicate those insights in a way that is lively, interactive and humorous in every talk we do. We strip away the technical jargon/psychobabble to present weighty concepts in a readily understandable form - complete with pop culture references and real life examples - so that people not only appreciate the material, but truly enjoy it.
Though behavioral finance/investing psychology is fascinating, many talks on the subject amount to the investing equivalent of “parlor tricks”. They point out interesting or quirky tendencies in investing behavior… but what do you do with it? MarketPsych takes fascinating material, but roots it in actionable steps our audience can take to grow their business or bottom line. Our audiences doesn’t just leave educated and entertained. They leave with a plan.
At MarketPsych we know that the role of psychology in investing decisions is a constant, but the investing conditions are constantly changing. Value for an audience is what meets their needs today, not 6 months ago and not at some undetermined point in the future. MarketPsych delivers superior value by speaking to what’s happening now.
